Advanced Audio Routing

This guide is meant to go over advanced audio routing with the Aitum Vertical Plugin. This first section will be an overview of the idea behind how audio routing works in OBS with regards to the Aitum Vertical Plugin. We will then expand into more detail on how to go about setting things up properly!

By default, the Aitum Vertical Plugin will capture the same audio as the main OBS canvas. One thing to keep in mind is that OBS itself only has a single ‘Audio Pipeline’ and the Vertical Plugin is limited to using that pipeline.

This means that any and all sources that produce audio that you want to use in either the Main canvas or the Vertical canvas, needs to be present on the main canvas (in a scene on the main canvas).

Now this doesn’t mean it needs to be ‘heard’ on the main canvas. That’s where audio tracks come in. OBS has 6 separate audio tracks. If you are familiar with using a ‘Twitch VOD Track’ setup in OBS to remove music from your VOD track, this should sound familiar already. You can set the Vertical recording and Vertical streaming encoders to use Track 3 (assuming you are using Track 2 for a Twitch VOD track). Any audio sources you want to hear in the Vertical plugin can be routed to Track 3 in the Advanced Audio Properties menu in OBS.

Separating Audio Between Main and Vertical Canvas

To allow a source to be heard only on the Vertical canvas, first we will add it to the corresponding main canvas scene. Let assume you have a ‘Just Chatting’ scene on the main canvas that is linked to a ‘Vertical-Just Chatting’ scene in the Vertical canvas.

In this example, you want to have an audio alert for new followers in the Vertical scene but you don’t want it to be heard on the main canvas.

Add the Vertical Canvas follow alert source to the Main OBS just chatting scene, then right-click anywhere in the audio mixer of OBS and select ‘Advanced Audio Properties’. From here you can route specific sources to specific tracks. Set the Vertical Follow alert source to be on Track 3 and remove it from all other tracks. By default the Main OBS canvas send all it’s audio to Track 1.

We will then jump into the Vertical settings and manually set the Recording and Streaming encoders for the Vertical plugin to use Track 3 for their outputs! This means anything we set to Track 3 will be heard on the Vertical stream/recording and NOT be heard in the main canvas if it’s not routed to Track 1. Just keep in mind that you’ll need to uncheck the ‘Use Main OBS Settings’ box in order to manually set the Audio tracks on the Vertical Plugin.
